“Lucky enough”: Ben Stokes’ rallying call to England team

Rain had ended England’s chances of retaining the Ashes urn last year after the fourth Test match ended in a draw with relentless rain hampering the proceedings. England had won the fifth and final Test, which means Australia retained the Ashes as both teams won two games each of the five-match series. In a rallying cry to his teammates after the fourth match, England skipper Ben Stokes delivered a powerful speech. In the three-part documentary series “Ashes 2023 | Our Take”, produced by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Ben Stokes' insights have come to the fore.
"Everything we've done up until now isn't going to stop because we haven't managed to win the urn back. The reward for our work isn't what we get but what we become,” said Stokes.
"And what we have managed to do is we've managed to become a sports team that will live forever in the memory of people who were lucky enough to witness us play cricket.
"I know it's going to be a bit flat, I know it's going to hurt that we go into the next game (at The Oval) not being able to get the urn back. But what we have done is something a lot bigger than any Ashes trophy could ever signify for this team – be the team that everybody will always remember."
Since taking the reins as England's Test skipper and head coach, Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have revolutionised the game with their aggressive and fearless approach known as 'Bazball.' This new approach, characterized by aggressive and fearless cricket, has produced a mixed bag of results. England’s upcoming assignment is the three-match Test series against West Indies that will begin from July 10 with the first match scheduled to take place at Lord’s.
