“Our planning is that he won't be there in Pakistan”: George Bailey
Australia’s national selector George Bailey has said David Warner won’t be considered for ODI Champions Trophy next year, to be played in Pakistan. Despite retiring from international cricket, David Warner had recently announced that he would be available to play for Australia at the Champions Trophy if selected. David Warner’s retirement from international cricket came into effect at the recently concluded T20I World Cup where Australia suffered massive defeat.
Australia made an early exit at the T20I World Cup 2024, failing to qualify for the semi-final. Now, with his latest remarks, George Bailey has cleared the air surrounding Warner’s comeback.
"Our understanding is that David is retired, and [he] should be commended on what has been an incredible career across all three formats. Certainly, our planning is that he won't be there in Pakistan,” Bailey said.
"You never know when Bull's joking…think he's just stirring the pot a bit. He's had a wonderful career, can't celebrate it enough, and think as time goes by, his legacy of what he has done for Australia and we reflect back on that, the legend of a player is only going to continue to grow. But as far as this team goes and the journey to transition to some different players, in his case across all three formats, it's going to be exciting,” he stated.
David Warner announced his retirement in phases as he played his final ODI match at the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. And, earlier this year in January, David Warner played his final Test series.
