Sri Lanka name T20I squad for India series, Chandimal returns, Mathews dropped

Charith Asalanka will be leading Sri Lanka in the upcoming three-match T20I series against India, beginning 27th July. Asalanka’s ascendancy was known after Sri Lanka on Tuesday announced their 16-player squad for the T20I series against India.
Asalanka’s appointment comes in the aftermath of Wanindu Hasaranga, who following Sri Lanka’s horrible campaign at the T20I World Cup 2024, relinquished the captaincy. Previously, Asalanka has led Sri Lanka on two occasions in the absence of then skipper Hasaranga.
Moreover, Dinesh Chandimal has made his return to the team on the back of a successful run in the recently concluded Lanka Premier League 2024. In the eight games, he clubbed 287 runs. Chandimal was last seen in action for Sri Lanka two years back in 2022. Surprisingly, experienced Angelo Mathews has been omitted from the squad.
Sri Lanka squad for India T20Is: Charith Asalanka (c), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Janith Perera (wk), Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (wk), Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Dushmantha Chameera, Binura Fernando
