SL vs IND 1st T20I: India hold their nerve to clinch a spectacular win, surge to 43-run victory
In a spectacular start to the three-match T20I series, India edged out Sri Lanka by 43 runs in a high-scoring first encounter on Saturday at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. Indian bowlers held their nerve to restrict razing Sri Lanka to take 1-0 lead in the series.
Inserted to bat, India posted a humongous total of 213 in 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the team a breezy start, hitting (34) and (40) respectively. But, skipper Suryakumar Yadav (58) led from the front with a commanding half-century.
Yadav’s half-century was backed by a 49-run knock by Rishabh Pant thus firing India to a commanding total. Their innings were characterised by precise shot selection, propelling India to a mammoth total of 213.
Chasing a target of 214, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start, thanks to their openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, smacking (79) and (45) respectively. Their partnership gave Sri Lanka hope of pulling off a remarkable chase. However, their middle-order crumbled and their chase lost momentum.
Indian bowlers Axar Patel, and Arshdeep Singh tightened the screws with their disciplined bowling, claiming two wickets each. Moreover, Riyan Parag was quite impactful, snaring three wickets. While, Mohammed Siraj and Ravi Bishnoi took one wicket each to help India bowl out Sri Lanka for (170) in (19.2) overs.
