“For me, Pakistan comes first”: Shaheen Afridi opens up about captaincy

The T20I captaincy snub for Pakistan quick Shaheen Afridi had come as a huge blow but for the left-arm pacer team comes first. Shaheen Afridi recently opened up about being removed as T20I skipper after just being into the role for merely six months.
Afridi was appointed Pakistan’s T20I skipper in 2023 after regular skipper Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy across all formats following Pakistan’s dismal run at the ODI World Cup 2023.
But, just ahead of the T20I World Cup 2024, Shaheen Afridi was removed from captaincy and Babar Azam was handed back the reins. Despite the change in leadership, Pakistan’s fortunes couldn’t be changed as they failed to advance to the playoffs at the T20I World Cup 2024, being eliminated during the group stage itself.
“For me, Pakistan comes first. Then the team, and then me. I don’t live in the past. My job is to stay in the present. I don’t think about the future because if your present is good, then the future will be good. Captaincy is not in my hands and I don’t play cricket for captaincy,” Shaheen Afridi said while speaking to reporters.
"I play cricket for Pakistan, and I’ll play it with respect and will win more games for Pakistan,” Shaheen said.
