Sehwag weighs in on Gambhir’s appointment as head coach

Gautam Gambhir’s stint with Indian men’s cricket team as head coach began on a successful note after India crushed Sri Lanka to complete a 3-0 series whitewash in the three-match T20I series. But, Gambhir’s successful start took a hit, with India suffering a 2-0 flogging in a three-match ODI series, which followed T20I series, against Sri Lanka.
As for Gautam Gambhir, he took over as India’s head coach after Rahul Dravid’s term as head coach came to an end at the end of T20I World Cup 2024. Gambhir carries huge experience under his belt, having remained part of few franchises at the IPL.
Recently, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag reacted to Gambhir’s appointment as head coach by remarking that Gambhir's presence will bring a sense of clarity in players’ role. Both Sehwag and Gambhir have played for India for so many years, forging quite a few memorable partnerships. During their playing days, Gambhir used to be Sehwag’s opening partner.
Sehwag further feels that there are not plenty of challenges for Gambhir from coach’s perspective as players know their role. Sehwag also emphasised that Gambhir’s arrival will benefit India.
"I don't think there is much challenge because there are more professionals there. Recently the players have won the T20 World Cup, the players know what their role is. With Gambhir's arrival, the players will get clarity that this is the role, you have to do this. So this will be a benefit to the Indian team," said Sehwag in an interaction with Amar Ujala.
Sehwag also stressed that players will have much pressure as they have to get the result.
"Gambhir's challenges will be less and the players' challenges will be more because they will feel that we have won the T20 World Cup, so now we should win the Champions Trophy or the ODI World Cup or the Test Championship. So the players will have more challenges than the coach. Because Gambhir is there to help them," he added.
