England in a mess after Gill launches India to a mountainous 587

Team India have stamped their authority in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston with a commanding performance across both batting and bowling departments. After putting out a colossal first-innings total of 587 runs, India tightened their grip on the match by reducing England to 77/3 by stumps on Day Two (Thursday).

The star of the show was undoubtedly skipper Shubman Gill, who etched his name in the history books with a masterful maiden double century. Gill’s 269 from 387 balls is the highest-ever score by an Indian in England, surpassing the previous record held by the legend Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 221 at The Oval in 1979.

Gill, who took over India’s captaincy following Rohit Sharma's retirement in May, delivered a masterclass in temperament, technique, and class. His innings was peppered with 30 boundaries and three sixes.

With a colossal total on the board, England's top order wilted under pressure, with Zac Crawley (19), Ben Duckett (0) and Ollie Pope (0) departing one after another. Indian seamers struck early — Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj making immediate inroads. At 77/3, England trail by a daunting 510 runs and face an uphill task heading into Day Three on Friday. Joe Root and Harry Brook remain key hopes as England eye a boisterous start on day three.
