Former Australian player appointed Italy’s new skipper

Former Australian batter Joe Burns has been named Italy’s new T20I skipper, taking over from Gareth Berg. Burns takes over the captaincy duties from Gareth berg ahead of ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Regional Final. Italy are hoping to qualify for the 2026 T20I World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka. 

Burns has played 23 Tests and six ODIs for Australia and is eligible to play for Italy through his mother’s heritage. During his career with Australia, he scored 1,442 runs in 40 innings across 23 matches, including four hundreds. He made his debut for Italy in June as he gears up to begin a new journey with the team. For Italy, he has played five T20Is so far and scored 211 runs.
