AUS vs IND 4th Test: Australia snatch thrilling win, lead series 2-1
The epic Boxing Day Test between India and Australia in Melbourne in front of a raucous crowd came to a thrilling conclusion, with India facing a tough defeat against Australia, losing the game by 184 runs on Monday.
Chasing a daunting target of 340, India were bowled out for just 155, with Pat Cummins and Scott Boland claiming three victims each. India's top-order again succumbed to Australia's determined bowling, handing Australia a well-deserved victory. With the win, Australia lead the five-match series 2-1.
Australia, after winning the toss and opting to bat, dominated the opening innings with an impressive score of 474. The Australian batters put on a solid display, with contributions from all corners. While the total was built steadily over the course of their innings, it was Steve Smith, who made huge efforts playing a knock of 140.
India’s response in the first innings was largely built around an extraordinary performance from Nitish Kumar Reddy, who slammed a maiden Test ton. His remarkable knock of 114 helped India reach a total of 369, narrowly avoiding the follow-on. Meanwhile, the rest of the Indian batting line-up struggled to put together significant contributions, thus putting themselves under immense criticism.
Australia began their second innings with same approach but they didn't enjoy the same amount of contribution as they did in the first innings. Despite the pressure, they were able to accumulate 234 runs. Marnus Labuschagne was the standout performer, top-scoring with 70 runs.
India’s chase of 340 began on a tricky note as their skipper, Rohit Sharma, who hasn't been helpful enough, again made an early exit, losing his wicket for 9 off 40. While, Jaiswal was holding the fort from one end, he didn't get the significant support from other end, with the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul departing for (0) and (5) respectively.
Despite the resistance from Jaiswal, India could not withstand the pressure from Australian bowlers. They were bowled out for just 155 runs as their batting line-up again failed to put up a fight.
