Former Indian cricketer calls Shubman Gill an overrated cricketer

Former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth has criticized young Indian batter Shubman Gill for his gloomy performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Srikkanth lashed out at the batter, calling him an overrated player. Management's faith in the star batter didn't pay off as he failed to pull off impressive innings despite having enough opportunities. He played the last three games, but didn't live up to the expectations, producing only 93 runs. He registered the figures of 13, 20, 1, 28 and 31.
"I've always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer, but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
The former chief selector, questioning Gill's place in the playing XI, also pointed out why he is getting a long rope. He also questioned that why players like Suryakumar Yadav were not given a long run in Tests.
"When Gill is getting such a long rope, some people might wonder why even players like Suryakumar Yadav couldn't have been given a longer run in Tests," he said.
"Suryakumar didn't have the best start in Tests, but he has the technique and ability. Yet, the selectors and management have boxed him into being a white-ball specialist. So now, fresh talent needs to be looked at."
Srikkanth urged the management to consider players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan ahead of Shubman Gill.
âRuturaj Gaikwad, for example, has been doing wonderfully in first-class cricket. But theyâve not bothered to pick him. Meanwhile someone like a Sai Sudharsan has been lighting it up in âAâ tours. You have to promote these kind of talents. Instead they are running around circles by picking Gill,â he said.
âGill is right now surviving because he gets ten chances and scores on the tenth chance after nine failures. And because of that, he is getting another ten chances to succeed. Anyone and everyone can amass runs on Indian wickets, The challenge is scoring away from home in SENA countries and thatâs where players like KL Rahul pass the test,â he mentioned.
