“There is no one to support you other than yourself”: Shreyas Iyer ahead of his return to team India

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is set to return to action for team India in the three-match ODI series against England, beginning on Thursday at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Shreyas Iyer, a terrific batter, who was part of India’s 2023 World Cup squad, has been out of action for a long time.
But, his consistency in delivering powerful innings has earned him a place in India’s ODI set-up. Last year, he was overlooked by the BCCI for the central contract but always remained in contention on the back of his outstanding innings in domestic cricket. Making his comeback, Shreyas Iyer has now finally broken his silence on his gap in international cricket.
"I feel this gap which I basically got from international cricket has given me a lot of learnings. To be honest, I don't run behind success I follow a certain routine and preparation which will take me towards success. For me a champion is me. It is all in the mind. I personally feel there is no one to support you other than yourself. You keep elevating yourself, transforming from one level to another and you never cry over spilt milk," Iyer said in a video posted by BCCI.
Shreyas Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to title victory in IPL 2024. And, he was a part of Mumbai team that won the Irani Cup and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
"I always keep saying that I love staying in the present. I have been grateful that I have won so many championships in 2024. The journey overall teaches you a lot. You win some, you lose some and experience a lot. If you run behind something you will get it but there is a journey towards it. It is not like you get it overnight," he added.
“The more you achieve, the more success you get. It is important and essential to be down to earth and see that you show a gratifying gesture towards everyone. I never underestimate myself."
“I see to it that I don't have realistic thoughts because whenever I have that, I am doubting my abilities and you are limiting yourself to excel. You see so many failures – people keep talking about your skills, techniques and a lot of other things. So you just turn a deaf ear and that self-belief is the most important point,” said Iyer.
Shreyas Iyer said he would love to be in present and focus on the ODI series.
"I love to be in the present and that is what I am going to do, focus on the ODI series. It gives me chills every time I wear the Indian team jersey. I would absolutely play the game with full energy and give my best," he added.
