WPL 2025: All you need to know about the showpiece event

The 2025 season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) is set to commence on February 14, 2025, with the face-off between defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women and Gujarat Giants Women at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. The tournament, which features five teams, will run till March 15. For the first time, the WPL will be played across four cities - Vadodara, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Mumbai.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana are the successful captains. Having led their sides to title victories in the past editions. Harmanpreet Kaur led Mumbai Indians to WPL title in 2023, while Smriti Mandhana guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to title win in 2024. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will enter the tournament as defending champions.
This year’s edition has seen some notable absentees as well, with a few high-profile players missing out for various reasons. RCB will be without Sophie Molineux and Kate Cross, who are out due to injuries. And, Sophie Devine has taken a break from cricket.
One of the most experienced players and UP Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy will also miss the third edition of the tournament due to a foot injury. In another development ahead of the third season, Ashleigh Gardner will captain Gujarat Giants, replacing Beth Mooney. However, Mooney remains part of the team.
Each team will clash with other teams twice during the league stage. The team finishing at no.1 will straight storm into the final. While, the teams placed second and third will face each other in the Eliminator to secure the spot in the final.
