Ponting lauds Gill’s exceptional skills following Champions Trophy hundred
Australia's cricket legend, Ricky Ponting, has expressed his admiration for the young Indian batter Shubman Gill, who has been making waves with his remarkable performances. Ponting's endorsement of Gill serves as a significant acknowledgment of the young player's growing potential.
Gill, who has been a standout performer in recent months, was recently named the ICC No.1 ODI batter. He also scored a glittering century to help India seal a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Champions Trophy opener in Dubai on Thursday.
“He thoroughly deserves to be the number one ranked batsman in the world at the moment and it's a great sign for India that he's got his account underway early in the first game of a Champions Trophy,” he said.
Ponting, following Gill's dazzling century in the Champions Trophy opener, pointed that white-ball cricket really suits Gill’s style of play.
“He's been a very, very good international player for a number of years. He hasn't sort of transferred that over into Test Match cricket yet, but his white ball cricket over the last three or four years has been outstanding. Look, he's a big game player as well. He's played really well in IPLs over the last couple of years, obviously being captain of his franchise there.”
