“But after winning…” Rohit Sharma opens up on his T20I retirement

Indian cricket legend Rohit Sharma bowed out from T20I cricket after leading India to the Men's T20 World Cup title last year in June in Barbados. India had claimed a seven-run victory over South Africa in the final, with Virat Kohli cracking 76 from 59 balls. The T20I title victory marked India’s first ICC title win in 11 years. Meanwhile, speaking on his T20I retirement, Rohit Sharma said that he had already made up his mind to retire from the shortest format regardless of the outcome at the World Cup.

“When I announced my retirement from T20I… if we had not won the T20I World Cup, I would have announced my retirement anyway because it’s not fair for me to continue; you have to give chances to the others. But after winning, you feel that you still have it in you; you are playing well, and you have given the result as well, so why not? Why not continue?,” Rohit said in an interview with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.

“Because this place that you have earned by no means came to you just like that. You worked really hard for it. I know what all I have done in my life and all the things I have gone through to get this. So I have an idea of all these things. So why do you want to leave? If you are batting well, giving results, then why?,”.

Rohit Sharma recently announced his Test retirement, bringing an end to a distinguished career. He, however, will continue playing ODI cricket.
