BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar explains the reason behind Bumrah not being named Test captain

Shubman Gill has been appointed the new Test captain of Team India, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from Test cricket. Gill’s immediate assignment as Test captain is the upcoming five-match Test series against England, scheduled to begin in June. India also announced an 18-member squad for the five Tests against England, with a few new players making their return to the side.
Gill’s appointment came as a surprise because senior player Jasprit Bumrah’s name had been doing the rounds for India’s Test captaincy. Meanwhile, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has explained the reason behind Bumrah not being named India’s Test captain. Agarkar stated that Bumrah might not be available for all Tests in England, which also put him out of the captaincy race.
“I mean, not really booms (Bumrah), because he led in Australia. He was vice captain in Australia but once he's not going to be available for all the test matches, I think he's more important to us as a player. We want him fit. There's always that extra burden when you're leading, managing 15-16, other people, there's a lot that it takes out of you,” Ajit Agarkar said during the press conference.
"We'd rather have him bowling as well as he does than putting that extra burden on him. He's aware of it. We’ve had a chat with him. He'd rather look after himself and be bowling fit." Agarkar added
Indian squad also features Karun Nair, who has made his return to the side for the first time since 2018. Other than Nair, Sai Sudharsan has been added to the squad as well. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer have failed to make the cut.
