Glenn Maxwell to lead Washington Freedom

Wednesday, 11-Jun-2025
News

Days after his retirement from the ODI cricket, Australian big-hitter Glenn Maxwell has been named the captain of the Washington Freedom, replacing Steve Smith into the role. The Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 is set to begin on June 13 with the face-off between the San Francisco Unicorns and the defending champions, the Washington Freedom.

“Glenn Maxwell will lead the Freedom squad in Cognizant Major League Cricket 2025. Steve Smith will captain the side in the two games he plays during the season,” the franchise stated in a social media post.

Steve Smith, who captained the side to the title win last year, will only play two games in the tournament. And, during the course of those two matches, he will take over the captaincy. Smith’s absence in the initial games of the tournament is due to the WTC final between South Africa and Australia.
