Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has supported pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s choice to sit out of the fifth and final Test against England, considering it a necessary move to manage his workload effectively. Ahead of the series, Indian management had confirmed that Bumrah would feature in just three of the five Test matches. This decision was taken in order to manage his workload. Ashwin, having played with Bumrah, praised Bumrah’s approach, calling him a valuable player.

“I am pleasantly surprised because if this were the Indian team of the past, they would have persuaded Bumrah to play the final Test. Even now, the team management might have looked at it, but from Bumrah’s perspective, this is a sound decision. He had already decided that he was going to play only three Tests, and he stuck to that,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“His back issue is not a normal one. It has kept him out of the game for almost two years. He is a valuable asset to the Indian team. So, the decision is the right one, and I am pleasantly surprised. I am very happy that Bumrah is prioritising his body because, in the long run, he will be very useful,” he added.

Talking about the match, India have taken back the control of the proceedings in the fifth Test with their bowlers doing a perfect job. They bowled England out for 247 after scoring 224 in their first innings. In their second innings, India are at 75/2, carrying a 52-run lead.
