Lee Fortis breaks silence on the altercation with Gambhir

A week after the tense face-off with Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, Oval groundsman Lee Fortis has broken his silence on the ugly altercation, saying he was never the villain. Notably, ahead of the decisive fifth and final Test at The Oval, tensions between Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and The Oval curator Lee Fortis had reached the boiling point after he reportedly instructed the Indian coaching staff to stay a few metres away from the main pitch square, despite them wearing rubber-spiked shoes or joggers.
Fortis’ instruction infuriated Gautam Gambhir, leading to a heated exchange. As per reports, Fortis was not happy with the Indian staff being too close to the main square during an optional training session.
“Well, I was never the villain; I was made into one. Hope you guys enjoyed the show, and the atmosphere was like the IPL. It was a great game,” Fortis said while speaking to PTI.
Nonetheless, the fifth and final test between England and India turned out to be an enthralling spectacle, with India producing an eye-catching performance to win the game by six runs. Siraj led the charge for India, taking five wickets in the second innings to bowl England out for 367 in chase of 374. The victory also helped India level the five-match series 2-2.
