Asia Cup 2025: R Ashwin shares his opinion on Gill and Jasiwal's selection

India are approaching the naming of their Asia Cup 2025 squad, with expectations building around some bold decisions. Meanwhile, there has reprtedly been an intense discussion surrounding the place of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal because only one seemingly is expected to make the final cut. Gill has lately been in hot form, having recently finished the five-match Test series against England as the highest run scorer with 754 runs. He is expected to be back in India’s T20I side following his brilliant performance.
On the other hand, Jaiswal has already been part of India’s T20 setup, giving selectors a tough time. Now, with the buzz growing louder, former Indian cricketer R. Ashwin has thrown his support behind Yashasvi Jaiswal.
"There are a few talking points regarding the Asia Cup. The first question that comes to everyone's mind is whether Shubman Gill fits into the T20 plans because in the last World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal was the backup opener. So Jaiswal automatically gets a kick-in. Rohit Sharma is not going to be a part of that team, so Jaiswal automatically gets a look-in," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin further emphasised that selectors could face a massive challenge in bringing Gill back into the side, as Sanju Samson has already cemented his place in the side.
“Now, who is going to be that other opener? Shubman Gill had an outstanding series. Can he return to the squad? Sanju Samson has had a fabulous run as a T20 opener for India. So I think it is a tricky state for the selectors," he said.
