"His contributions are no less than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma": R Ashwin on Cheteshwar Pujara
India star batter Cheteshwar Pujara on Sunday retired from all forms of cricket, putting an end to a more than decade-long career. He represented India in 103 test matches, scoring 7,195 runs, including 19 centuries and 35 half centuries. He ended his Test career as India’s eighth-highest run-scorer. In his white-ball career, Pujara played five ODIs, scoring 51 runs. Pujara, who largely remained a powerful force in Test cricket, mostly batted at no. 3, serving as a cornerstone of India's batting lineup.
Paying a tribute to Pujara, former Indian cricketer R Ashwin lauded his contribution to Indian cricket while underlining the fact that Pujara was 'instrumental' in helping Virat Kohli accumulate runs in Test cricket.
“What did Cheteshwar Pujara stand for in Indian cricket? I said his contributions are no less than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Obviously, a lot of people talk about their contributions. The attention is not there," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“Not every cricketer gets the attention, but that does not mean their contribution is any less. Pujara's contribution at No.3, believe it or not, was instrumental in helping Virat Kohli also make a lot of his runs.”
Earlier this year in May, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also called time on their Test careers; however, they are still available to play in ODIs. Meanwhile, Ashwin bowed out of international cricket last year in December during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
