"I have told this to the boys": Gautam Gambhir reflects on India's home Test series defeat against New Zealand

Gautam Gambhir's ascension to the role of India’s head coach has been marked by immediate impact in the white-ball format, leading the side to title victories in both the ICC Champions Trophy and the recently concluded Asia Cup. However, Gautam Gambhir has faced a tumultuous period in the red-ball format, as it has been far less fruitful for him. Gambhir’s tenure in red-ball cricket has been marred by disappointing results and inconsistent performances.

His first major challenge came in the form of a home Test series against New Zealand, where India suffered a shock defeat. New Zealand had swept the series 3-0. Reflecting on that defeat, Gambhir did not mince words.

"I don't think that, in my coaching tenure, I can ever forget that, nor should I forget that. I have told this to the boys as well; it is important to look forward, but sometimes it is also important to remember the past as well. Because if you forget the past, then you can start taking things for granted. You should never look to take anything for granted. Because New Zealand, I felt that everyone thought that we could roll them over. But that's the reality. And that's the sport," Gambhir told Jio Hotstar.

“For me, in that dressing room, we need to keep reminding the boys that New Zealand happened. That’s one of the reasons why we don’t want to give an inch to the opposition now,” Gambhir added.

The clean sweep against New Zealand also marked India's first defeat at home in more than 24 years. India’s next major Test assignment against Australia also ended in disappointment, where they were outclassed by the Aussies. Currently, India are locked in a second and final Test against West Indies being played in New Delhi. India lead the series 1-0.
