The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided a massive update on injured Shreyas Iyer. India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious injury during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday. Iyer clutched a sensational catch only to find himself rushed to hospital.

During the Australian innings, Iyer was positioned at backward point when Alex Carey edged a short ball off Harshit Rana. Iyer sprinted back, launched himself full-length and completed a tumbling catch. During the process, he landed awkwardly on his left side, clutching his rib-cage or hip region in visible pain. He was escorted off the field and did not take any further part in that innings.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen," BCCI stated in a release.

"He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."

India won the third ODI by nine wickets to avoid the series whitewash. Notably, Iyer is not part of the T20I squad.
