Babar’s nervy innings takes Pakistan over the line

Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi led the way as Pakistan closed out their T20I World Cup campaign with a three-wicket win over Ireland on Sunday at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill, Florida. Babar Azam, scoring 32 unbeaten, remained resolute, seeing wickets falling at the other end at regular intervals. Shaheen Afridi, with his 13 off 5 deliveries, including two sixes, took the team over the line.

It remained a hard-fought victory for Pakistan, who paid the heavy price in the tournament after failing to record victories in their initial encounters. Despite their early elimination from the tournament following losses in the first two matches, Pakistan displayed resilience and skill to clinch a significant win but it was too little too late.

The match against Ireland was pivotal for Pakistan, offering them a chance to salvage pride and demonstrate their capabilities. Asked to bat, Ireland put up a notional total, bolstered by the standout performance by Gareth Delany scoring 31 off 19. Their top-order batsmen struggled to put on significant partnerships after Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi and Imad Wasim chipped in with crucial scalps at regular intervals.

In reply, Pakistan had a fair start, with Saim Ayub and Mohammad Rizwan contributing 17 runs each and making significant strides towards the target. Fakhar Zaman (5), Usman Khan (2) and Shadab Khan (0) remained below par, but Babar kept going from the other end to see his team go over the line in 18.5 overs.
