“There will be no change in the brand of cricket”: Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav, who was appointed India’s new T20I skipper recently, is set to lead the team in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, beginning from 27th July (Saturday). This will be his first assignment as captain, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. Despite the change in leadership, Yadav has expressed confidence in maintaining the current team dynamics and approach.

As fas as general trend goes, whenever there is a new leader at the helm, change is bound to happen, but Yadav has emphasized that his focus will be on continuity and building on the team's existing strengths. India will be without the presence of its powerful trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja who recently bowed out of T20 international at the end of T20I World Cup 2024.

“There will be no change in the brand of cricket. With the retirement of three players, it will be difficult to fill the shoes, but obviously people have practiced so much, new players have come, they are already doing well when they play franchise cricket. And the matches they played for India, they have done very well in that too. So I have a lot of trust in those three, who have just come in their place, that they will do well," Yadav said during the press conference.

This will also be the first assignment for Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, who succeeded outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid whose term came to an end at the end of T20I World Cup 2024. Suryakumar Yadav also highlighted his bonding with Gambhir.

"It's now been 10 years since we've been working together, even though I went into a different franchise in 2018 and he also went to another. We used to be in touch regularly and talk about the game, despite us being in different teams. There have been learnings in the last six years too when I was not with him," he said.

"Our bond is special, we have spoken about the upcoming three T20s, not in great detail but we know each other fairly well, we can read each other's body language. There are some things he understands even if I don't say them in words. There's a special bond between a captain and coach. I'm very excited for this journey," he noted.
