“He is an excellent choice for captaincy in T20s”: Former Pakistan cricketer Moin Khan on Shaheen Afridi

Pakistan's fast bowler Shaheen Afridi was appointed as Pakistan’s T20I captain following Babar Azam’s resignation from captaincy across all formats post the ODI World Cup last year. Babar’s departure was largely attributed to the team's lacklustre performance at the ODI World Cup 2023, where they failed to advance past the group stages.
However, Shaheen’s tenure as Pakistan’s T20I skipper only lasted one series because Babar Azam was again handed Pakistan’s white-ball captaincy in March 2024. Shaheen Afridi was replaced by Babar Azam just ahead of the T20I World Cup 2024. Pakistan’s decision to bring back Babar as captain ahead of the T20I World Cup backfired because team again failed to advance further and was eliminated during the group stage itself.
Now, former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Moin Khan has supported Shaheen Afridi saying that removing Shaheen Afridi from T20I captaincy was unjust as he should have been allowed to continue for long.
"Shaheen Afridi has the ability to lead the team and is highly liked by the players. He is an excellent choice for captaincy in T20s. In white-ball cricket, I don't see anyone else suitable for the role. Removing him from the captaincy was unjust. He is one of the best T20 players, and I've noticed his performance has slightly declined since he was removed from the captaincy," Moin told Cricket Pakistan.
