Pant secures enormous IPL deal, becomes the most expensive purchase
In a massive moment at the IPL 2025 mega auction on Sunday in Jeddah, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant secured a huge deal, setting a new record to become the most expensive player in the history of the competition. Pant was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a whopping INR 27 crore, surpassing the previous record set by Shreyas Iyer, who was acquired by Punjab Kings just minutes earlier for INR 26.75 crore.
They broke the record for the most expensive purchase, which was set by Kolkata Knight Riders by buying Mitchell Stars for INR 24.75 crore at the 2024 auction. LSG outlasted SRH to secure the services of Rishabh Pant, who had been released by Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
LSG and RCB started the bidding for Pant, but when RCB decided to leave the race SRH joined in, but they too dropped out after LSG took the bidding to 20.75 crore. The auctioneer asked Delhi Capitals whether they wanted to use right-to-match option to get back Pant. DC were in favour of that. However, as per rules, the team, which won the bidding, were given another chance and LSG increased their bid from INR 20.75 crore to INR 27 crore, which DC denied to match.
