The future of two of India’s most iconic cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in ODIs is increasingly becoming uncertain as it continues to remain a subject of intense debate. Having already stepped away from Test and T20I cricket, both players now face uncertainty regarding their presence in ODIs. There have been reports suggesting that the Indian selectors may be considering a shift in the ODIs following the Australia series. Amid the swirling uncertainty, former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has urged the Indian selectors to retain both stalwarts in the ODI side.

“India don’t have dependable players at No. 1 and No. 3 (in ODIs) at the moment, especially when chasing,” Raina told Telecom Asia Sport.

“Rohit and Virat’s experience is very important. It’s crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit,” he added.

Raina also cited Kohli's and Rohit's powerful ODI form. They both were central to India’s success at the Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year. Overall, Rohit Sharma has scored 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs, while Kohli, has 14,181 runs in 302 matches at an impressive average of 57.88,

“They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room,” Raina said.
