“Getting Steve Smith’s wicket is just amazing for me”: Shamar Joseph
It turned out to be a priceless debut for West Indies youngster Shamar Joseph who lived a dream day by claiming the wicket of Steve Smith in the first Test match on Wednesday at Adelaide Oval. Shamar Joseph considers Smith as one of the best players, and getting his wicket was a moment that must have been a dream impossible for him until it came true today.
The day, technically, belonged to Joseph after his show with the bat, adding crucial runs to West Indies' average first innings total of 188. Joseph became the second player from West Indies to take a wicket with the first ball.
“I didn’t miss my run-up. It was just nervousness bowling to the best batsmen in the Australian team that I consider. I was just nervous. So I just went and built in my mind to get the first ball right - just on top off stump. Getting Steve Smith’s wicket is just amazing for me,” Joseph said After the first day’s play.
“Getting Steve Smith, I’ll remember this for the rest of my life. I’ll actually take a picture, and post it up in my house."
Shamar didn’t get the expected start with the first ball as he cut short his run up. But, coming again with the delivery that was bang on where he wanted it to be with Smith edging back to third slip to be caught by fellow debutant Justin Greaves.
“I watched back a few Test matches of Steve Smith, and I think that is an area of weakness for him. So I just say that I will just hit the top of off because he’s a batter that triggers across a lot; he tries to take you off of your line. So I just stuck to the basic, hit just on top of off, getting a little movement away, and got the edge. Bowling to Steve Smith isn’t easy,” Joseph said.
